At that level apparently it has more to do with learning sequences of letters and being good at maths rather than ability with the language.
Does he play the game in English? I assume there are different language versions of the game?

Yup, it helps if you can memorise the two and three letter word lists and create grids where you're creating five or so words each time.
My ex girlfriends mum was phenominally good at scrabble, it was never particularly clever words more being able to lay word on top of another and in the process create four or five two letter words etc.
I used to play a lot an know the two letter word list to the point it *really* hacks people off when you can get 'QI' in as a valid two letter word (even better on a double or triple square) when they think you're lumped with an unusable 'q' as all the 'u's have gone.

Yes, professional Scrabble players cheat by using the Scrabble Dictionary (as opposed to the English Dictionary), into which Scrabble players have managed to shoehorn loads of spurious two and three letter words which don't exist.
